It has taken awhile, but there is finally a bit of competition emerging for the iPhone in the Smart Phone category. We all knew it was just a matter of time before other companies came back with their response and the Samsung Jet is definitely one of them.
First off the bat is the fact that touch screens are steadily starting to replace keypads and keyboards. The Samsung jet in one the new of phones that now functions using a full touch screen. This is huge as it opens a whole new realm of possibilities with the phone. Another interesting feature is the display itself. It is 3.1" and is an AMOLED display. This gives the user high resolution comparable and probably exceeding the iPhone with its LCD displays. This is especially important for the media elements of the phone.
The Samsung jet definitely holds its own as a media phone. It has a high function 5 megapixel camera, music and video player, video recording capabilities. This however shows the flaws that emerge with some of the new technologies integrated. Video is still only at 30 fps so while images will have photo like quality video is still not quite comparable to standard digital video cameras. Also there are issues with battery life. Like most new models the Samsung smart phone can function on 3G networks however this new technology is a major drain on batteries. This will most likely mean new research and advances on battery design. In the mean time you will have to deal even with low talk times somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 minutes.
